How to create a cosy reading corner in your home

Create a cosy reading corner

Mindfulness. Meditation. And finding meaning … through journaling or quiet contemplation. These techniques are becoming more and more popular as we attempt to escape the hustle, centre ourselves and increase our productivity.

But, it can be difficult to integrate them into our routines … that’s why I love to create a cosy nook in my home that’s a dedicated spot for reading, writing and mediation.

Here are some the essentials I need to make sure my spot is comfortable … perhaps you can integrate them into your home too.

Aesthetic and comfort come first for me … I just can’t think if I don’t like the look of the space I’m in! (Haha!) So, a good looking and cosy couch, cushions which I can prop up for extra support and some of my favourite ornaments and coffee table books nearby are musts.

One thing about me … I always have a candle burning. I find the glow and fragrance so calming, especially when I need a little downtime. Flowers are another essential in my home, and I like to create varying heights and depths on my coffee tables with all my favourite things. Here, I’ve placed my wax burner next to stacked books with an ornament on top and placed a tall vase of flowers behind them to create three varying heights. I also love to theme spaces in my home, and our lounge makes me feel like I’ve escaped to the African bushveld … one of my favourite places. Elephants always make me think of my Dad, so I like to have nods to them close by.

I recently got a Kindle which has been a game-changer when it comes to reading and accessing books – it’s just so easy to find and buy the books I want to read. I’ve also made the spot really cosy with this throw which I have styled over one arm of the couch.

Good lighting is key if you are reading or writing – but I can’t stand overhead lights which are too bright. I always place lamps next to couches and I particularly like a standing one which gives off a gentle light which is soothing, especially when I read in the early mornings.

We’d love to hear how you’ve created a calming and inspiring space in your home. Drop us a line on
