Four Gauteng markets to visit over the weekend … plus a chance to win!

Compiled by digital manager and food blogger, Varushka Padayachi – aka @curry_for_breakfast

Farmers and makers markets have become very popular hang-outs for families, couples and friends. Here’s my guide to some of my favourite markets and my best market finds…

The Field Market

Taking place on the second Saturday of every month is The Field Market at the Field and Study Park in Parkmore. I love the setting in a tranquil park, there’s ample space to sit and listen to the awesome live music and to peruse the market offerings. The market showcases locally made products and small businesses.

Check out:

  • Hunny Honey – Sandra’s delicious pure seasonal farm honey is a must. She does tastings at her stall so you can choose your flavour, which could be orange and litchi, orange blossom or blue gum, or my personal favourite macadamia.

  • Pet Billies – Anyone with a cat knows they are super fussy when it comes to food. I’ve bought countless expensive treats for my furbaby, Jesse, which he sniffs and turns his nose up at. But one treat that never fails to excite him is Pet Billies dehydrated chicken. It’s pure air-dried chicken fillet. Simple but evidently satisfying for all pets. They also have chicken liver and beef liver sometimes.

  • ACDH Gin – It’s 11 o'clock somewhere, which is why my first stop at The Field Market is ACDH Gin to get a cocktail I can walk around with. They often feature interesting SA-made gins in their cocktails, which are always exciting, using seasonal ingredients and delicious tonics.

Next market: Saturday 10 September 2022

Melville Farmers Market

On every Saturday from 9am to 2pm, the Melville Farmers Market is more of a traditional makers and farmers market. Featuring delicious preserves, homemade breads, microgreens and baked treats from the community. You can do your shopping then use the goods for your Saturday brunch.

Check out:

  • Granny Gems Jams for preserves and jams

  • Irfaans Delights for baked goods and gifting boxes

  • Cup Classique for herbal teas such as rosehip and mint.

Next market: Every Saturday from 9am to 2pm

Pretoria Boeremark

Further afield and for the early risers, The Pretoria Boeremark is a personal favourite of mine. This is a very authentic, no frills farmers market with farm fresh vegetables and fruit, venison, Karoo lamb and beef, free range chicken and eggs and much more all at the most affordable prices. The market starts at 5.30am though and most stalls are sold out by 9am so you need to get an early start and dress warm.

Check out:

  • AJ’s Slippers for the warmest, most comfortable and well-made slippers around.

  • Hendrik’s Chickens for enormous free-range fresh chicken, whole and in pieces.

  • Dirla Homestead for cheese and dairy products. I love the marinated mozzarella knots, which are a great addition to a charcuterie platter.

Next market: Every Saturday from 5.30am to 9.30am

Fourways Farmers Market

The Fourways Farmers Market has in fact moved to Modderfontein Nature Reserve. However, the new space is much bigger and is now able to accommodate the amount of visitors the market gets, being one of the most popular markets in Joburg. The best part of Fourways Farmers Market for me has always been the prepared food offerings. I love a good food market, reminiscent of the food markets in London such as Borough Market and Camden Market.
