Why choose handwoven fashion

The ins and outs of handwoven fashion

The Piebald Boutique is open … hip hip hooray! And you’ll find many of the fashion items in our collection are handwoven. There’s good reason for this – these pieces were specifically selected.

Handweaving is an eco-friendly and non-mechanised process of creating garments, and handloom fabrics are found to have a wonderfully soft texture and are quite durable – which means you’ll be able to keep them in your wardrobe for a lengthy time. Including these items in our store is our way of taking a step towards sustainability. It also gives a nod towards one of our founding principles which is to focus on building capsule collections for your wardrobe with timeless pieces that’ll last through trends as well as wear and tear.

Many of the handwoven products selected by The Piebald Boutique were made in India which is believed to produce 95% of the world’s handwoven fabric. This craft in India is 2000 years old and provides employment to more than 43 million people in the country.

India celebrates the handweaving craft … and when you wear your handwoven products, be sure to wear them with pride. Back in 2016, the then union textiles minister, Smriti Irani, started the #iwearhandloom Twitter campaign in which she tweeted a photograph of herself wearing handwoven silk from Bihar and called on others to share their handwoven fashion and tag five people. The campaign took off with many sharing their photos on social media. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to do the same when you wear your handwoven fashion from The Piebald Boutique.

Handwoven Black-and-White Pleated Satin Skirt

This handwoven pleated skirt in polyester satin has a v-shape in the front and back. It's silky to touch – which really adds to that glam feeling – and the wide waistband cinches to give you a flattering shape. At the sides, the skirt comes to the mid-calf area and tapers down to just above ankle-height at the front and back.

The skirt was handwoven by artisans in Bengaluru (Bangalore), India.

Pleated skirts are all the rage ... and there's really no wonder why as they'll elevate your look whether you're going to a classy event, a casual lunch or hitting the shops. They're just so versatile ... wear them with heels and a tee (in winter, opt for a long-sleeved one and pull on some stockings too), and you've got a really elegant look. Style them with an oversized knit and chunky boots, and you'll look casual while keeping warm on chilly days. Tired of wearing jeans on errands? (We know the feeling!) Pull on a denim jacket and sneakers with your pleated skirt, and you're set to go, go, go.

The skirt is available in sizes ranging from XS to XL for R999. To find out more, click here

Handwoven Pleated Trousers in Charcoal-Black

The trousers are pleated, they have pockets and they're made from polyester which means they should stand the test of time. They were handwoven by artisans in Bengaluru (Bangladesh) in India ... an eco-friendly, non-mechanised way of producing softly textured handloom fabrics.

With a tiny chequered print, these trousers are a charcoal-black colour. Think of them as business in the front and comfort in the back as the waistband is elasticated at the back. The three-quarter trousers cinch slightly at the calf for a refined look.

These trousers are available in sizes ranging from S to XL and retail for R899. Click here to find out more.

Handwoven Cotton Poplin Shirt with Leg-of-Mutton Sleeves in Black

Everybody's after a puff sleeve at the moment, and with this classy handwoven cotton poplin shirt with leg-of-mutton sleeves, you'll be right on trend.

Being handwoven, the detailing of this shirt is impeccable ... from the ruched bust area to the A-line flare from under the bust to the waist, and the statement leg-of-mutton sleeves – the farbric's loose and full around the shoulder and upper-arm before it cinches and is tighter-fitting (although still loose) around the fore-arm. The sleeves are three-quarter length.

This shirt was handwoven by artisans from Bengaluru (Bangalore) in India.

This shirt is available in XS, S, M & L, and is R799. All the details … click here

Hand-Stitched Cotton Blouse with Single Puff Sleeve in Black

The blouse is cut in black rayon cotton so it's super-soft and, as it's hand-stitched, the details are on point. The hand-stitching was done by artisans in Mumbai ... what this entails is individually cutting and sewing the thread together by hand.

A single puff sleeve. A peplum. And a wrap-around belt to cinch the waistline... This hand-stitched cotton blouse ticks all the boxes when it comes to the trends we've seen dominating the northern hemisphere's spring/summer collections. It also has a classic and timeless quality to it which we love.

This blouse is available in sizes ranging from XS to XL. It’s R899 … all the deets, click here.
